ColorTest

Posted on Nov 25th, 2008 by Doug : Back Yard Artist Doug
Colortest
Watercolor, Bee's wax and Pigment on Folded Paper 22" X 30 "

A color test
like when I hold
a buttercup
under your chin
to see if you
really like butter
only this is not a
buttercup

perhaps it is a
red
or a pink
like your skin
at night in the
candlelight
and I can't
really see
but only feel

the softness
of your moist
shoulder under
my cheek

of the variegated
green like
sunspots through
the forest ceiling
like a Monet
dancing silently

like sailboats
like stars
trailing off
through twilight
wishing
the warmth
of sun
of Saturdays
cut grass scent
as you open
your eyes
to a day of
matinees and
the madness

of pure imagination
of golden Naples
yellow fields
of starry nights
swirling
about our
sitting quietly
reading the old
torn books
of our youth

oh and there is one
more color test
it's that color
in the woods
straight ahead
under the trees
the moonlight
lighting a path to
the right

and you want
to walk into the
light
but you know
the path is ahead
and the color
is unnamed
other then you
know the color
is yours,
even if it is
a bit dark
when the moonlight
is in your eyes

One of them is a dream and the other is only a memory. Only after a while you can't really remember, was the dream or did it really happen. But the best part is when the dream really happens.

This piece literally breathes. I can only imagine how awesome it must look “in person.”  Your words speak truth and comfort to me.  Thanks.

This is wonderful, Doug.  Like otter just said, your words do speak truth and comfort.  Also a shining joy of the unnamed color which is ours….   The picture is incredible as well.  What an interplay of colors between poem and picture…..

Hi Catherine and Thank you!
I recently led a group on a moonlit walk through the redwoods near me in Half Moon Bay. I instructed everyone to walk in groups of two and to not talk on the way. We where to hike up a firetrail next to a creek that runs through the forest and all meet at the first bridge over the creek. Although I have been walking this trail for 14 years now at one point on the walk I had to stop because I wasn't sure which way to go. Somehow I knew straight ahead under the trees into the dark was the right way but the moonlight would have had me turn off the main trail. It seems to me that there is always a gift when we get lost.

Thank you Kathy!
These “skin” paintings are so hard to photograph because they are somewhere in-between being a painting and a sculpture. Over the weekend I photographed a new piece I had finished and the lighting emphasized the underpainting. I liked the way the photograph looked better then the actual painting and so I thought I would rework the painting a little. BIG Mistake!!
So 3AM Saturday morning I had an overworked painting and one of these days I'll learn to just take what comes my way without trying to improve it!

Doug, i see a face near the top right hand corner - it there, or is it my imagination? It is a really lovely painting!

and the poem is spot on!

Oh yeah, like a white cats face?
Well it is imagination, that and shadows and light.
Thank you Hummy!
Hugs((()))

I love the soft colour, the textured feel to this painting, one of my favourites. And of course, the poetic accompaniment always delights.

Hi Ruth, TY! Hey I think my colortest and your snow-u4r7 piece would look great hanging on the same wall, don’t you?
Is that yours?
It’s wonderful!
