Pattern Butterfly Perennial Sundots

Posted on Jul 20th, 2008 by Doug : Back Yard Artist Doug

I went to the library today

Ben picked out movies

Twirling the racks of dvd's

Twirling through the aisles

Passed children

Seated

Shhhh silent

I picked up a book of poems

By Billy Collins

Turned to page 32

And learned about love

And languor

I have been hiding lately

Behind the bookshelves

Somewhere between magic

And poetry

And are you also hiding

Somewhere so near that I can't see you?

Neither of us dare speak

Pretending the other

Is not there or

If they were

They would not be paying attention

Our noses glued to

The words of others

Avoiding

Not looking

At the blank space

Left

Where our words

Passed each other attending.

I think that cells

Split in two and

In two again

And again

In one unbroken continuous chain

Through time

Knowing that someday

Soon

They will find the beginning

this is beautiful

I am silent
…. paying respect to Longing
who reels between Grief and Hope

this mother of Wishes

I guess it's all a search for Present
who knows only
'It is here'

much love

love and languor… makes me think of James Joyce's poem from Portrait of The Artist as A Young Man

…Are you not weary of ardent ways,
Lure of the fallen seraphim?
Tell no more of enchanted days.

Your eyes have set man's heart ablaze
And you have had your will of him.
Are you not weary of ardent ways?

Above the flame the smoke of praise
Goes up from ocean rim to rim
Tell no more of enchanted days.

Our broken cries and mournful lays
Rise in one eucharistic hymn.
Are you not weary of ardent ways?

While sacrificing hands upraise
The chalice flowing to the brim,
Tell no more of enchanted days.

And still you hold our longing gaze
With langorous look and lavish limb!
Are you not weary of ardent ways?
Tell no more of enchanted days.

Much love to you too Hummy, always! And Thank YOU! There is nothing like just allowing feeling to get you into the present. Feeling isn't even time bound, it just is and has always been provided we just listen. I'm all ears.

Ah Nicole, you're such a lover and Thank you for the James Joyce! It's perfect!

i like the way your poem started with kind of an easy description of going to the library and it then became deeper and i enjoyed being carried into it. I like the part about finding the beginning.  there is a saying can't quite remember it about coming home and knowing it for the first time. something like that. or I might be entirely wrong.

Hi Jenni and Thank you! I was stealing from Billy Collins I think as his work makes a lot of sense to me and the way I see. It's all so simple and yet remarkably rich.

Oh yes Nicole you're right in the middle of that hug!

I missed you Tara! I saw you dancing as the car was pulling out of the driveway, the sunlight was just cresting the hills to the east, falling so lovely on your graceful movement through space. I wanted to Scream STOP the Car!! but I couldn't, wouldn't dare disturb your soft, quiet, moment. Thank You!
